Online Class Frequently Asked Questions
How does an online class work?
Online classes are what the business world refers to as a "webinar". At the specified time, the leader (in our case our instructor Gwen) and the participants log on to the online meeting. Folks can talk and listen via a conference call or the sound system within their computer. Information from the instructor's screen will show up on all the participants screens just as if they were watching a presentation in class or seeing a flip-chart. Students will be given their class materials electronically prior to class and will be encouraged have them available as well as any homework and supplies (just like a regular class). Students will also be able to ask questions as they have them. So much is the same as an in-person class, you just don't have to travel.
Are online classes the same as in-person classes?
In almost all cases, class content is the same for either type of class. However, I know from experience that face-to-face instruction is always going to be a bit better. But with the convenience and savings of being able to take a class from the comfort of your own home, the slight difference in instruction is probably well worth it.
Is your entire class catalog available as an online class?
My personal teaching style uses a variety of instructional techniques making many of the classes I offer good candidates for online classes. However, I am also aware that not all classes will transfer well into an online environment. If you are looking to take a particular class online that your don't see currently being offered, just contact me and we can discuss future possibilities.
I am not very technical, will I be able to take an online class?
Everything you will need is readily accessible and very easy to use. If you can print an e-mail attachment (your class hand out) and get onto the internet (oh wait, you are already here), then you should be good to go. But if you are worried you are going to have problems, don't wait until the last mintue to get set up and if you have any problems we will be here to help.
Will I have to download any special software?
When you "Join a Meeting" at GoToMeeting for the first time, it will automatically down load a small application on to your computer, but it is painless and only take a couple of minutes. You will also need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print the class materials which you can download for free.
Do I need special equipment to participate in class?
You can either call a dial-in number from your phone or use a microphone and speaker connected to your computer. If using the computer option, a headset really makes sense as then you can be hands-free and most of the background noise is eliminated. If for some reason you cannot get on the voice portion, you can also ask questions via the chat screen. So there are lots of options for participation.
I want to take a series of classes, but I cannot make one of the sessions, can I still sign-up?
Obviously it is always best to attend class live, but there are options. If the class is being offered more than once, if space is available, arrangements can be made to let you attend that class. If that is not an option, all classes will be recorded including the class conversation and screen activity and can made available if arrangements are made in advance.
I still have some questions -- now what?
You are always welcome to contact us with any questions. Because I travel quite a bit, most of the time, e-mail is my best form of contact.
