New for 2008
Dear Gwen,

It has been 4 months since my last newsletter, but that is because I have been busy working on all sorts of new things for 2008. We have several new patterns in our Skill Builder pattern line, we have reworked all our Class In a Bag products to become Skill Builder patterns as well, and we are looking at offering classes in a whole new way.

So many of you know I have been thinking about writing a book on entrelac. Well, over the last few months of 2007, I was in contract negotiations with a major knitting book publisher to be one of their next authors. So the deed is done and the official announcement was made at Stitches West this past month.

You guessed it, I will be publishing my entrelac book with XRX, Inc., one of the finest knitting book publishers in the industry. So the next question is always when is it due out? Not until early 2010 (these things take time), but that means there is still time to participate in my book titling contest. If you want to get a head start on the newest up-and-coming knitting technique (entrelac), join me at Camp Stitches for my class, Entrelac: The Beginning to Endless Possibilities.
For me, the design process is always about using a project (or design) as a means for communicating or practicing a particular technique or skill. So, new designs rarely have a theme, but this past January's new releases turned out to have a theme, "Everything Old is New Again". Each of the new patterns launched at TNNA in Long Beach had elements of both old and new. This is the most new patterns I have offered in a number of years. And with the book deadlines looming, it will probably be the most you see from me for the foreseeable future!

Three of the new patterns are either updates or enhancements to patterns that were originally in our line. The Top Down Sweater now has a 12 sizes, something for everyone in the family. The Sidewise Cardigan was always destined to be put into the Skill Builder line and the newest model will feature Malabrigo yarn. The St Tropez Shell pattern is now the St Tropez Twin Set with the addition of a 3/4 sleeve open front cardigan.

However, the newest pattern, Brenna's Vision is also one of the oldest in concept. The pattern was inspired by a one-time character on Star Trek:The Next Generation named Brenna. Be the first person to e-mail me with the episode name in which the character appeared and you will receive a free copy of the pattern. E-mail me at gwen @ knitability.com (remove the spaces) and put Brenna's Vision in the subject line.

As promised, with the first newsletter of 2008 there is now a free pattern included. I debated about the best method for sharing this, and subsequent patterns and decided that a page dedicated to my free patterns was the best method. As new patterns are offered, they will be added, each in a PDF file format.

This time I am offering a pattern of three items and I made for myself as a way to experiment with some left-over hand dyed yarn. Since that time, I have received a number of requests for the pattern.

So with the prospect of the upcoming book, I had been posting about the book writing process. Of course, recently I haven't posted about anything! However, it seem appropriate to take an opportunity to actually post about knitting classes since, this is supposed to be the Knitting Professor.

During one of our many trips up to the local ski mountain this past ski season, Arlis and I started talking about what is the one product that Knitability should offer that we currently are not. Well, I wanted to be able to teach more classes to more people, but there is a limited market in my home town and it just isn't practical to be traveling all the time even if there was interest in having me booked all the time.

There is a lot new at Knitability for 2008. Come on over and see what is new!

Happy Knitting,
